We are excited to add a new class this season, “Historic Gravestone Preservation”. The endangered, “Old Baptist Cemetery”, here in Hannibal, Missouri, will be the hands-on training ground. This cemetery was founded in 1837 and has enslaved peoples, early settlers from Virginia and Kentucky, Civil War Veteran graves and of course a slew of Baptists The class will be taught by Jonathan Appell who is one of the top gravestone conservators in the country.

Faux (Fake) Painting & Restoration of Historic Faux Painting is a unique class.

Before the 1870’s it was not very classy to have much real, natural wood. You could really show your affluence if you could afford an artist to grain your plain pine or poplar to look like exotic woods such as mahogany, rosewood or even quarter sawn oak. Stone was also faux painted in many high end, historic houses.

Historic Masonry Preservation is a fun and intense, two-day, hands-on learning experience. The stone, brick and mortar being preserved will be done in accordance with The Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation. You will be part of a team of students performing the foundation preservation on the circa-1859 Lamb-Munger Mansion in the Central Park National Historic District in Hannibal, Missouri. Exterior Painting of Historic Structures is a fun and intense, three-day, hands-on experience. It often just seems easier to replace wood siding that just won’t hold paint for more than 3 to 5 years. This workshop will teach each participant how to achieve a paint job that can last 15 to as many as 20 years. For property owners and small contractors, cost effective painting of wooden exteriors is an excellent way to save money and preserve original materials.
