Too often it just seems easier to rip out the old and replace exterior materials on old and historic properties with new products. This urban legend is just not true. For historic property owners this will often diminish the value of their property and cost them more money than repairing original exterior wood. Cost effective preservation of exterior wood components is an excellent way to keep your properties integrity and save money. Bob Yapp, author, teacher and nationally known old house expert will be the instructor. Students will learn the techniques used to preserve original, exterior wood components. You will learn how to repair & install wood siding, repair rotted trim, sills, and other a wooden architectural features rather than replacing.

Exterior Painting of Historic Houses & Buildings is a fun and intense, three-day, hands-on experience. It often just seems easier to replace wood siding that just won’t hold paint for more than 3 to 5 years. This workshop will teach each participant how to achieve a paint job that can last 15 to as many as 20+ years. For property owners and small contractors, cost effective painting of wooden exteriors is an excellent way to save money and preserve original materials. You will be part of a team building exterior storms for a house in the Maple Avenue National Historic District in Hannibal, Mo. This is a tuition-based class with a limit of eight students. You will be working side-by-side all three days in the shop with instructor Bob Yapp. Bob has been a woodworker and furniture designer/maker for 48 years.

You will be part of a team restoring tongue and grooved wood flooring in a historic house in the Central Park National Historic District in Hannibal, Missouri.

This is a tuition-based class with a limit of 8 students. You will be working side-by-side all three days with instructor Bob Yapp. Bob is nationally recognized as one of the top experts in hands-on preservation and has restored over 70,000 square feet of historic wood floors of every variety.

This will be an intense, learn-by-doing opportunity. This class is not about aggressively drum sanding wood floors so they look new. Much like fine antiques we want to keep the character defining features and patina of the flooring.

You will be part of a team of students performing stone restoration in historic Hannibal, Missouri. John Speweik is back teaching this workshop here at the school. You will be working side-by-side with John for the two days. The dates for this class are back-to-back with “Historic Masonry Preservation-Repointing” September 4 & 5, 2025. Some students may opt to take both classes over four days.
