The bewildering array of modern colors and poor advice from many designers make it difficult to create an authentic color scheme.  This class will prepare you to choose appropriate exterior colors and color placement that will complement the architectural character and style of your historic building.

We are honored to have a new instructor with a whole new practical and scientific approach to choosing period paint schemes for historic properties, Mark Johnson.

Mark is an Iowa native who currently resides in Minnesota’s Twin Cities metropolitan area. Mark founded Historic Design Consulting in 2007 and provides a range of consulting and hands-on restoration services, including window restoration, restoration carpentry, historic finishes, plaster and masonry.  Mark has a graduate degree in history as well as a certificate in historic preservation and has taught many classes on historic finishes, period paint colors and window restoration. He has particular interest in traditional materials and building techniques, and often used period tools in his restoration work.

Choosing a period-appropriate exterior color palette for your historic home or business can be a challenge. The bewildering array of modern colors and poor advice from many designers make it difficult to create an authentic color scheme.  This class will prepare you to choose appropriate exterior colors and color placement that will complement the architectural character and style of your historic building.

We will cover a number of topics during this the two-day course, including traditional pigments, color placement, architectural styles, historic painting techniques and technology, the Munsell color system and lead safety.  Hands-on components of the course will include paint analysis and the examination of exterior colors in Hannibal.

All skill levels are encouraged to attend. Potential students include: Historic house museum maintenance staff; HP contractors; homeowners; building owners; city, county & state HP staff; not-for-profit housing organization staff; architects; preservation commission members.

 Tuition is $495 and includes: fresh ground morning coffee and snacks; a home cooked lunch daily; a Certificate of Completion and backup materials.
