Too often it just seems easier to rip out the old and replace exterior materials on old and historic properties with new products. This urban legend is just not true. For historic property owners this will often diminish the value of their property and cost them more money than repairing original exterior wood. Cost effective preservation of exterior wood components is an excellent way to keep your properties integrity and save money. Bob Yapp, author, teacher and nationally known old house expert will be the instructor. Students will learn the techniques used to preserve original, exterior wood components. You will learn how to repair & install wood siding, repair rotted trim, sills, and other a wooden architectural features rather than replacing.

Faux (Fake) Painting & Restoration of Painted Stone & Wood Grain will be a unique class.

Before the 1870’s it was not very classy to have much real, natural wood. You could really show your affluence if you could afford an artist to grain your plain pine or poplar to look like exotic woods such as mahogany, rosewood or even quarter sawn oak.

This class will be taught by Bob McCarty. Bob is a St. Louis area artist who is renowned throughout the central Midwest as one of the country’s best faux (fake) wood grain and faux stone artists. His company, Painted Effects, has done work in many iconic and historic structures in the St. Louis area.

Too often in our society fathers tend to spend more time teaching their sons how to think in a so-called “handy” way. As instructor and owner of The Belvedere School, Bob Yapp says, “This is really unfortunate. In truth, when women are given the opportunity to learn this way of thinking, their skills almost always exceed men’s. Our goal for this class is not to discriminate against men, they’re just not invited.” You will be a part of a team of interesting and interested women learning a variety of old house maintenance skills at the school’s headquarters, the historic Lamb-Munger Mansion in the Central Park National Historic District in Hannibal, Missouri.
