Exterior Painting for Historic Structures

October 8, 2021 –
– October 10, 2021

Exterior Painting of Historic Structures is a fun and intense, three-day, hands-on experience. It often just seems easier to replace wood siding that just won’t hold paint for more than 3 to 5 years. This workshop will teach each participant how to achieve a paint job that can last 15 to as many as 20 years.

For property owners and small contractors, cost effective painting of wooden exteriors is an excellent way to save money and preserve original materials.

Bob Yapp & Duffy Hoffman will be your instructors.

Description

Exterior Painting of Historic Structures is a fun and intense, three-day, hands-on experience. It often just seems easier to replace wood siding that just won’t hold paint for more than 3 to 5 years. This workshop will teach each participant how to achieve a paint job that can last 15 to as many as 20 years.

For property owners and small contractors, cost effective painting of wooden exteriors is an excellent way to save money and preserve original materials.

Bob Yapp & Duffy Hoffman will be your instructors.

Duffy is a third-generation artisan trades master. He has served as a consultant, project manager and master craftsman on iconic historic projects from coast to coast.  He volunteers his time with the Preservation Trades Network and is the recipient of their Askins lifetime achievement award. Duffy conducts workshops all over the US-teaching the artisan trades, in window sash restoration and the painting of historic structures.  He is now donating a lot of time to rural America through Youth Build/AmeriCorps saving significant structures.

Bob Yapp is the Founder of the Belvedere School, author, teacher, and nationally known old house expert.

Participants will learn the techniques used to prepare exterior wood surfaces in a way that assures paint will stick well and last a long time. Attendees will learn: how to safely remove paint; how to scrape properly; how to clean the surfaces; how to pick the right paints, how to apply primer, caulking and finished top coats. You will also learn the ins and outs of interior painting and finishes

This class is limited to 14 students and pre-registration is required. All skill levels are encouraged to attend.

Potential students include: contractors; homeowners; building owners; city, county & state HP staff; not-for-profit housing organization staff; architects; preservation commission members.

Now for the COVID part of this workshop. It is nearly impossible to keep 6 feet separation during class. We can keep separation at lunch and on the huge porch in the evenings. As such, I am requiring every student to bring their personal COVID mask and wear it during class. I know it’s a pain, but there is no reason for us to put each other at risk. Sort of the new reality in the world. We were spotless before, but now we have serious COVID cleaning protocols for the Inn and the School, also for your safety. And of course, if you’re not feeling well, please do not come.

Tuition for this workshop is $495 and includes: fresh ground morning coffee and snacks; a home cooked lunch daily; a Certificate of Completion with backup materials.

Affordable motels as well as bed & breakfast inns are available for out of town students. Special rates are also available here at the Belvedere Inn B & B, contact Pat at 217-799-6086 or pbyapp@msn.com. For more workshop information or to pre-register call Bob Yapp, 217-474-6052 or email him, yapperman@msn.com.
