Painting Historic Structures

Date and Time:
September 25, 2020 - 8:00am - September 27, 2020 - 5:00pm America/Chicago
The Belvedere School, 521 Bird Street, Hannibal, Missouri 63401

Painting Historic Exteriors is a fun and intense, three-day, hands-on experience. It often just seems easier to side over original wood siding that just won’t hold paint for more than 3 to 5 years. This workshop will teach each participant how to achieve a paint job that can last 15 to as many as 20 years.

For property owners and small contractors, cost effective painting of wooden exteriors is an excellent way to save money and preserve original materials/character.

Bob Yapp & Duffy Hoffman will be your instructors.

Duffy is a third-generation artisan trades master. He has served as a consultant, project manager and master craftsman on iconic historic projects from coast to coast.  He volunteers his time with the Preservation Trades Network and is the recipient of their Askins lifetime achievement award. Duffy conducts workshops all over the US-teaching the artisan trades, in sash restoration and the painting of historic structures.  He is now donating a lot of time to rural America through Youth Build/AmeriCorps saving significant structures in the community.

Bob Yapp is the Founder of the Belvedere School, author, teacher and nationally known old house expert.

Participants will learn the techniques used to prepare exterior wood surfaces in a way that assures paint will stick well and last a long time. Attendees will learn: how to safely remove paint; how to scrape properly; how to clean the surfaces; how to pick the right paints, how to apply primer, caulking and finished top coats. You will also learn the ins and outs of interior painting and finishes

This class is limited to 12 students and pre-registration is required. All skill levels are encouraged to attend.

Potential students include: contractors; homeowners; building owners; city, county & state HP staff; not-for-profit housing organization staff; architects; preservation commission members.
